Naming Our Neighbors: The Demonyms of Los Angeles County

Ever heard the word “demonym”? It’s a fancy term that simply means the name for people from a certain place. Like, we all know someone from Los Angeles is called an “Angeleno.” But what about other spots in Los Angeles County? What do you call someone from Culver City or Avalon?

Well, we got curious and did some digging to find out. It turns out, there’s a whole bunch of these names, and they’re pretty interesting. Now, keep in mind, there’s no official rule book for these names, and folks might have different ones they use. But here’s a fun list we put together:

  • From Agoura Hills? You might be an Agoura Hiller or an Agouran.
  • In Alhambra? You’re an Alhambran.
  • Arcadia’s got Arcadians.
  • Artesia? You’d be an Artesian (and no, not like the water!).
  • Over in Avalon, you could be an Avaloner or an Avalonian.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Every place has its own name for the people who live there. From Beverly Hills where you might be a Beverly Hiller, to Venice where you could be a Venetian, there’s a unique name for everyone.

We thought it’d be cool to share this list with you, so next time you’re chatting with someone from a different part of LA County, you can impress them with your local know-how. And who knows, maybe you’ll find a new favorite demonym to use!

Hey, Wilmington folks, we’ve got a question for you: What do you call someone from our own Wilmington?
