Family of Juan Jose Areyan Calls for Community Support at Sentencing Hearing

WILMINGTON, Calif. — The family of Juan Jose Areyan, who was tragically killed last year when a vehicle struck him as he set off fireworks on July 3, is calling for public support at an upcoming sentencing hearing. Areyan, a father and husband, was participating in a longstanding local Fourth of July tradition in Wilmington when he was hit.

The incident, which occurred near a local Food 4 Less, drew significant community attention and was first reported by the Wilmington Chronicles. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Rachel Gutierrez, faces murder charges. She has been offered a plea deal for 20 years in prison with eligibility for parole after serving 50% of her sentence. The Areyan family believes the terms of the plea deal do not adequately reflect the gravity of the loss they have suffered.

In a statement released by Areyan’s sister on behalf of the family, they expressed their intention to gather a substantial public presence at the sentencing scheduled for May 17. “We feel that having a larger crowd may impact the sentencing,” the statement read. The family has urged the Wilmington community to join them in showing support during this critical time.

Supporters of the Areyan family are expected to gather outside the courthouse, holding candles and wearing ribbons to commemorate Juan’s life and to influence the court’s decision.
