Port of Los Angeles Sees Substantial Growth in Container Volume

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Port of Los Angeles, the nation’s busiest port, reported a significant increase in container throughput in February, marking the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

In February 2024, the port handled 781,434 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), a 60.18% increase from February 2023’s volume of 487,846.15 TEUs. This surge in activity underscores the port’s strong market confidence and operational efficiency.

“Market confidence in our gateway is as strong as it’s ever been,” said Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles. “With a long-term labor contract in place and the world’s best longshore workforce, we’re well-prepared for the demands of global trade.”

The detailed breakdown for February 2024 reveals that loaded imports reached 408,764.10 TEUs, up by 63.89% from the previous year. Loaded exports were also robust at 132,754.50 TEUs, marking a 61.10% increase. Additionally, the port processed 239,915.50 TEUs of empty containers, up 53.76% from 2023. Year-to-date figures for 2024 show the port has managed 1,637,086.40 TEUs, representing a 34.87% increase over the same period in 2023. The fiscal year 2023/2024 has seen a total of 6,129,388.25 TEUs, a 7.32% growth over the previous fiscal year.

Leo Huisman, APM Terminals’ Regional Managing Director for the Americas, emphasized the need for continued focus on infrastructure improvement, sustainability, and workforce upskilling to maintain this growth trajectory.
