WILMINGTON, Calif. — There is a growing concern over mail security in residential areas, a local resident of Wilmington has reported the theft of mail, including a credit card, from their mailbox. The stolen credit card was later activated by the thief, who attempted to obtain cash advances totaling up to $1,200 at various gas stations before the card was ultimately locked.
The incident, which happened at night, went unnoticed until the credit card issuer detected suspicious activity. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their ordeal through a direct message on our Wilmington Chronicles Instagram, encouraging others to keep an eye out so it doesn’t happen to them.
According to a conversation with a local mail carrier, mail deliveries in the area have been made as late as 9 p.m., a factor that may contribute to the vulnerability of unattended mailboxes during the late hours. In light of this, it’s a good call to get a lockable mailbox, pick up your mail quickly, and maybe put a hold on it if you’re out of town. See anything weird? Report it.
